about dawn

Dawn began painting in Wisconsin, but she really fell in love with the beauty of the American Southwest.  She is active in “plein aire” (open-air) painting groups, and when she is not painting in her studio in Jerome or Flagstaff, she can be found outdoors with her paint box and backpack, capturing first-hand the beauty of the desert, the mountains, and the wildflowers.  She believes that plein aire painting uniquely captures the depth and definition of the landscape; these qualities can be lost when working from photographs alone.

In selecting a subject for a painting, Dawn is guided by her intuitive reactions.  When a scene keeps calling to her, she pays attention.

Dawn’s experience has taught her that there is no substitute for spending time with your subject, whether it’s a landscape or a beloved pet.  In this way, the emotional ties are developed which are then reflected in the finished work.
