With either global warming, avian flu, or both Piñon Jays are becoming scarce at Grand Canyon and similar environments. Years past, I used to hear their cackling, laughing, somewhat derisive call frequently in the pines and scrub along the Canyon's rim. Now, when I hear their call, it's a rare treat. I painted this piece on the very edge of Yaki Point, far enough away that I couldn't hear the shuttle busses rumbling around the cul de sac. The morning was growing late, but that cliff face remained in shadow showing off lovely warm color from the opposite lit face upon which I was standing.
Call of the Piñon Jay was painted Sept 12 and is available September 17 at the opening of Grand Canyon Celebration of Art show in Kolb Studio.
